What Your Kindergartner Should Know

Ages 5-6 | The Foundation Year

Overview

Kindergarten is a pivotal year! Children transition from learning through play to more structured academics. By the end of kindergarten, your child should have mastered foundational reading and math skills that set them up for success in first grade.

Reading & Language Arts

  • Knows all uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Knows the sounds each letter makes
  • Blends sounds to read simple CVC words (cat, dog, sun)
  • Reads about 25-50 sight words
  • Writes their first and last name
  • Writes simple sentences with inventive spelling
  • Retells a story with beginning, middle, and end
  • Identifies rhyming words
  • Speaks in complete sentences

Math

  • Counts to 100 by ones and tens
  • Writes numbers 0-20
  • Counts objects accurately (1-to-1 correspondence)
  • Compares numbers (greater than, less than, equal)
  • Adds and subtracts within 5
  • Understands addition as "putting together"
  • Understands subtraction as "taking away"
  • Identifies and describes 2D and 3D shapes
  • Sorts objects by attributes
  • Creates and extends patterns

Writing & Fine Motor

  • Holds pencil with proper tripod grip
  • Writes all letters (may mix upper/lowercase)
  • Leaves spaces between words
  • Cuts on lines with scissors
  • Colors within lines
  • Draws recognizable pictures

How to Help at Home

Read every day for at least 15-20 minutes. Practice sight words with flashcards or games. Count everything! Practice writing letters and numbers. Play board games that involve counting. Visit the library weekly.
