Overview
Pre-K is all about building foundational skills through play and exploration. At this age, learning should be fun, hands-on, and pressure-free. Children develop at different rates, so don't worry if your child hasn't mastered everything on this list!
Language & Literacy
- Recognizes their own name in print
- Knows some letters (especially in their name)
- Understands that print carries meaning
- Holds a book correctly and turns pages
- Enjoys being read to
- Speaks in sentences of 4-5 words
- Asks "why" and "how" questions
- Can tell a simple story
- Follows 2-step directions
Math & Numbers
- Counts to 10 (working toward 20)
- Recognizes numbers 1-5
- Understands "more" and "less"
- Sorts objects by color, size, or shape
- Recognizes basic shapes (circle, square, triangle)
- Understands simple patterns (AB, AB)
- Compares sizes (big/small, tall/short)
Motor Skills
- Holds crayons and pencils (may not be "correct" grip yet)
- Draws circles and some lines
- Uses scissors (with supervision)
- Builds with blocks
- Buttons large buttons
- Pours from a small pitcher
Social & Emotional
- Plays with other children
- Takes turns (with reminders)
- Expresses emotions verbally
- Shows empathy for others
- Follows simple rules
- Separates from parents with minimal distress
How to Help at Home
At this age, play IS learning! Read together daily, sing songs, count everything (stairs, crackers, toys), sort laundry by color, and let them help with simple tasks. Focus on making learning fun and building a love of discovery.
