Overview

First grade is when reading "clicks" for most children. They transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Math skills expand significantly with addition and subtraction becoming more fluent.

Reading & Language Arts

  • Reads grade-level text with fluency
  • Knows 100+ sight words
  • Uses phonics to decode unfamiliar words
  • Reads with expression
  • Answers questions about what they read
  • Identifies main idea and details
  • Makes predictions while reading
  • Writes complete sentences with capitals and periods
  • Writes simple stories with beginning, middle, end
  • Spells common words correctly

Math

  • Adds and subtracts within 20
  • Solves word problems
  • Understands place value (tens and ones)
  • Counts to 120
  • Compares two-digit numbers
  • Measures lengths using non-standard units
  • Tells time to the hour and half-hour
  • Identifies coins and their values
  • Understands equal parts (halves, fourths)

How to Help at Home

Read together daily and have your child read to you. Practice math facts with games and flashcards. Encourage writing through journals, letters, or stories. Use real money for counting practice. Ask comprehension questions after reading.
