Overview

Fourth grade brings more complex reading comprehension, multi-paragraph writing, and challenging math concepts like fractions and multi-digit multiplication. Students begin researching topics and taking notes.

Reading & Language Arts

  • Reads and analyzes complex fiction and nonfiction
  • Summarizes texts accurately
  • Makes inferences using text evidence
  • Compares/contrasts themes, topics, and patterns
  • Understands figurative language (similes, metaphors)
  • Uses context clues and word parts to determine meaning
  • Reads fluently (110-140 words per minute)

Writing

  • Writes multi-paragraph essays
  • Uses transition words effectively
  • Writes research reports with multiple sources
  • Takes notes from texts and organizes information
  • Uses varied sentence structures
  • Edits for grammar, spelling, and punctuation

Math

  • Multiplies multi-digit numbers (up to 4 digits by 1 digit)
  • Divides with remainders
  • Adds, subtracts, and compares fractions
  • Understands decimal notation for fractions
  • Solves multi-step word problems
  • Finds factors and multiples
  • Measures angles and understands geometry concepts
