Overview

Third grade is a pivotal year! Students are now expected to "read to learn" across all subjects. Multiplication and division are introduced. Writing becomes more structured. This is often when standardized testing begins.

Why 3rd Grade Matters

Research shows that reading proficiency by end of 3rd grade is a key predictor of future academic success. If your child is struggling, early intervention is crucial!

Reading & Language Arts

  • Reads chapter books independently
  • Identifies theme and central message
  • Describes characters, settings, and events in detail
  • Compares themes across texts
  • Reads and understands informational text features
  • Determines meaning of words using root words, prefixes, suffixes
  • Reads fluently (90-110 words per minute)

Writing

  • Writes organized paragraphs with topic sentences
  • Writes opinion pieces with supporting reasons
  • Writes narratives with dialogue
  • Writes informational reports
  • Uses correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Revises and edits own writing

Math

  • Knows multiplication facts (0-10) fluently
  • Understands relationship between multiplication and division
  • Solves two-step word problems
  • Understands fractions as parts of a whole
  • Compares fractions with same numerator or denominator
  • Measures area and perimeter
  • Tells time to the minute
  • Interprets data from graphs
