You don't need formal tests! Here are simple ways to assess:

Letter Recognition: Point to letters and ask "What's this?"
Phonemic Awareness: "What sound does 'cat' start with?"
Decoding: Ask them to read simple words like "cat, dog, sun"
Fluency: Listen to them read a passage - smooth or choppy?
